G7 2017: why in Taormina?

G7 Taormina: everything you need to know about the choice of the Sicilian city.

On the next 26th and 27th May Taormina will host the meeting of the delegates of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States for the “Group of Seven”, the so-called G7.

These countries are the seven major advanced economies in the world and in that days the delegates will discuss important topics as culture, education and national identity.

The Italian Prime Minister, Matteo Renzi, during the launch press conference, stated the reasons why the Government has chosen Taormina as the location for the meeting: first of all, Taormina and the whole Sicily are the cradles of our civilization.

Some examples are Archimedes – generally considered the greatest mathematician of antiquity and one of the greatest of all time – and Empedocles – the philosopher who originated the cosmogenic theory of the four classical elements

Secondly, for the natural beauty of this place: Taormina is also called the Pearl of the Ionian Sea.

The symbol of the event is not accidental: they opted for the theatre, the most famous icon of Taormina in the world that every year is the location of many events, like the Taormina Film Fest and concerts of international celebrities, like Robert Plant – leader of Led Zeppelin – or Carlos Santana.

Finally, the choice of Taormina is the public answer to those who say that in Sicily there is just mafia.

In fact, the Prime Minister also listed some of the beautiful places that are in Sicily and that every year host thousands of tourists from all the world.

These places are far from the typical idea of mafia that people have and instead, they show both architectural and natural beauty; think about Syracuse, Palermo or Mount Etna.

However, if you would like to taste a mafia experience in Sicily, you can join the Godfather tour!
