62° Taormina Film Fest
Lights, Taormina, Action! It’s that time of year again when some of the world’s quality film stars come to see Taormina’s star quality… that’s right, the Taormina Film Fest has begun!
Over the years, the Taormina Film Fest, Italy’s equivalent to the Academy Awards has become one of the highlights of the film fest calendar, hosting some true legends of cinema. From Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant to Robert de Niro, Colin Firth and Tom Cruise, and the 62nd annual festival it is sure not to disappoint! With a mouth-watering programme of this year’s films to be shown in the ancient Greek Theatre and guest appearances from Richard Gere, Susan Sarandon and Rebecca Hall, Taormina is the place to be.
Taormina Film Fest got off to a spectacular start when it was opened last night by Gere, the Pretty Women heartthrob. The first film on the programme was Finding Dory, Pixar’s highly anticipated sequel to Finding Nemo, and the atmosphere was simply electric! To sit in a historical open air theatre under the light of the moon would already have been wonderful enough, but to watch a beautifully made animation picture film too….simply magical. If you don’t believe me, ask the locals – the applause of the audience at the end of the film could be heard across the town! Don’t worry if you missed out last night though, there is still a whole week of wonderful events yet to come.
However, there is so much more to see than just Taormina film fest, so it would a shame to not make the most of this beautiful area whilst you’re here. Why not take some fresh air and head up to see Etna? The company Etna People offer a variety of full day and half day tours every day to show you the stunning features of the volcano first-hand. You will be accompanied by a professionally trained guide in a small group of max. 8 people, and will have the chance to visit some of Etna’s craters, lava flows, valleys and lava caves, as well as the incredible Alcantara Canyon! A delicious aperitif or lunch will also be provided, and, depending on which tour you choose, the chance to taste 3 different Etna wines. And all in time to watch another of the festival’s films in the evening! For more information on the tours and how to book, check out their website at www.etnapeople.com.
As well as being blessed with a beautiful landscape, Sicily is one of the cultural capitals of the world. Whilst you are here, you could also take a day trip to visit another of Sicily’s treasures, such as the UNESCO World Heritage sites Siracusa, Agrigento, Noto, Palermo or Cefalù. Or if you’re looking for something a little more adventurous, how about a boat trip, snorkelling, or if you’re feeling really brave, paragliding? Deep in Sicily is an excellent tour operator and will organise your perfect day out down to the finest detail.
