Visiting Syracuse

Syracuse is one of the most beautiful cities in Sicily, thanks to its history, art, traditions as well as its perfect position in the land. It is a city that holds the whole range and cultural complexity of Sicily.

The city is located in the southeast corner of the island of Sicily, right by the Gulf of Syracuse next to the Ionian Sea. It has a thousand-year-old history: it was founded in 734 or 733 BC by Greek settlers from Corinth and Tenea, and soon became the main polis of Sicily.

This 2,700-year-old city played a key role in ancient times, as it was one of the major strongholds of the Mediterranean area. together with Athens, it excelled in power and wealth, covering a key role in the development of culture in the ancient world.

The city is notable for its rich Greek history, culture, amphitheatres, architecture, and it is also known for being the birthplace of the famous mathematician and engineer Archimedes. If you take a walk in the archaeological area, you can see the Latomie, the Ear of Dionysus, the Greek theatre and the Roman Amphitheatre.

The places to visit are numerous: the religious architecture, for instance, is a great heritage with its churches, monasteries and convents. Syracuse’s architectural peculiarities are many; among them, mainly villas and buildings.

Almost all the old buildings are on the island of Ortigia, while the rest of the archaeological heritage of Syracuse is distributed throughout the urban and suburban area.

The City was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1693: this is the reason why the baroque style is predominant.

From every corner of the city it is possible to catch a glimpse of the sea, and the maritime soul of Syracuse, Ortigia, will definitely leave you breathless.

This city, beautiful and diverse, is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Syracuse is a mandatory stop for anyone visiting Sicily. In particular, here’s a list of some must-see attractions:

From the city of Taormina, there are a lot of tours to visit Syracuse in a one-day-trip, even in small groups. Also, it is possible to visit Syracuse and Noto, another beautiful  and meaningful city in Sicily.
